How to Actively Pursue a Deeper Relationship with God through Contentment & Godliness by Sacha

How long have you been saved for? For me, it’s been just over nine years now. But let me tell you something...I still struggled with certain sins at the time. It took some time for me to truly let go of these sins and actively work on denying the flesh and walking on the straight and narrow.

There is a big change that happens when you become born-again. You become a child of God. You are now a new creation unto God. The Holy Spirit dwells within you.

The Reality of Becoming a Christian

You start a new life. You have a different perspective on the world. You start to understand more about God and His Word and His Creation. Slowly, over time, you will start to see that the way you were living was wrong, and that God created you specifically with a perfect plan and purpose that is different to how you thought it all was. However, some people will still struggle with certain sins. I, for one, went through this. And this is the reality of becoming a new Christian.

One of the biggest things that hit me when I became a Christian was experiencing spiritual warfare. And this was why I would struggle with certain sins after becoming born-again, because I was new to this spiritual battle that I was in (and still am in) against the devil and his demons. I would be choosing the flesh over the spirit. I wasn’t equipped enough to be able to win the battle over the flesh each day. Fornicating, lying, swearing, anxiety, anger – the list goes on.

It took time and dedication to studying the Word of God and actively applying it to my life (such as studying Ephesians 6 and putting on the full armor of God each day). It also took some time to learn more about spiritual warfare and how to conquer those fleshly temptations each day.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” - Ephesians 6:10-12.

I learned that our faith is a relationship with the Creator, and relationships take work and commitment. That is when I wanted to strengthen my relationship with God and have a closer connection with Him.

In times of weakness, God’s strength shines through. When we are weak, He is strong. It is through Him that we able to win over the battles of the flesh and walk in the spirit, following Christ.

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong” - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10.

Personal Development Is Key

The person that I am today; the Christian that I am today, is so different than the person I was nine years ago, even two years ago! This is because I committed myself to actively pursuing a deeper relationship with The Lord.

At first, I was learning all about the Bible and the many different doctrines out there. I would also be learning about all other kinds of things in the world when I first got saved. I would read my Bible and pray to God, too. But the difference between the Christian I was then versus the Christian I am now is that I broke free from those sins that were dragging me away from God.

Over time, the battles became easier, and the sins became less tempting or encouraging to pursue. The more I wanted to follow Christ and do His Will in my life, the less inviting or interesting the desires of the flesh in this world became. I was a babe in Christ, but now I am able to dive deep into the meaty parts of the Word and understand what God wants me to learn from these scriptures.

From Milk to Meat – How to Grow and Mature in the Faith

How does one go from being a babe in Christ to growing and maturing and being able to eat/understand the meat of the Word?

For starters, it takes time. Like I said before, the Christian that I am today is so different to the Christian I was a few years ago, and also when I first got saved.

Secondly, it takes discipline. Are you actively committed to growing and maturing in the faith? Do you want to pursue a deeper relationship with God? Do you want to learn more about Him and His Word? You need to create a wonderful daily routine that incorporates spending time with God each day studying the Bible, praying to Him and meditating on His Word.

Thirdly, this is a relationship, so it is a two-way street. Relationships take work, and communication. If you want to hear from God, pray and read the Bible. If you want Him to communicate with you, the same applies. Be still and be willing to stand in the presence of the Lord – listen to what He has to say.

Lastly, do His Will in your life, follow the Word, and learn to be content in all things. These are of paramount importance to strengthening your faith and building upon your relationship with God.

Here are 6 Powerful Ways to Actively Pursue A Deeper Relationship with God

1. Be Content in All Things

“But godliness with contentment is great gain” - 1 Timothy 6:6.
Philippians 4:11, it says to be content no matter what state you are in (“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content”).

This means that no matter what you are going through, or what kind of state you/your life is in, learn to be content.

Being content means to feel completely fine about all that is going on in your life. You are happy and satisfied with all that you have and who you are as a person too.

2. Pursue Godliness Through His Word

“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” - 1 Timothy 4:8.

Live a life that is pleasing to God. Study the Bible and actively pursue living a Godly life. As it says in 1 Timothy 4:8, godliness is profitable unto all things. I don’t know about you, but I find that the more I live a Godly, Christian lifestyle, the more I only want to do just that. I am living in the spirit, denying the desires of the flesh and the ways of this world, because I want to make God proud. There is no intention in my mind to live otherwise. All of this comes with time and maturity as well. Living a Godly lifestyle will also draw you closer to God.

Our faith should be shown in our actions and our words.

3. Study The Bible Daily

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” - 2 Timothy 2:15.

Create a daily routine that incorporates spending time in the Word each day. The Bible is daily nutrience for our soul. It is a series of Books that were authored and inspired by God. Therefore, if you want to have a deeper relationship with God, then dive deep into His Word each day.

4. Have A Strong Prayer Life

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” - Philippians 4:6.

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16 to pray without ceasing. This means to always stay in prayer. You can come to God in prayer for anything and everything. There is nothing that is hidden from the Lord. He cares for you, so let all of your requests be made known to Him in prayer.

Prayer is such a beautiful way to communicate with God each day because it is just like picking up the phone to call your friend. Jesus is our friend. And if we want to be best friends with Him, then we would actively want to work on building upon that relationship with Him.

5. Let God Take the Lead

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” - Proverbs 3:5-6.

Stop trying to control the things in your life that honestly you cannot control. Stop going down a path that isn’t what God created or intended for you to go down. Start truly living for the Lord by walking in the spirit, on the straight and narrow, following Him and doing His Will in your life. Let God take the lead. This is one of the greatest ways for you to get closer to God and grow in your faith with Him.

Sometimes it may be harder than other times. There will be many challenges that you will face in your life. But know that there is nothing that you cannot do with God by your side. He gives us the strength, courage and wisdom that we need to endure all hardships. God does not lead us anywhere to just leave us. God is always with you, and for you.

6. Let Go of Your Worries

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” - 2 Timothy 1:7.

God doesn’t give us the spirit of fear, Satan does. The more we allow these worries and fears to consume us and control us, the further away we are from God.

It is so very important for us to let go of our worries and fears, give them all to God in prayer, and trust that He will hear and answer our prayers in His perfect timing. There is nothing that is impossible with God. He loves us and cares for us. Trust that God knows what He is doing.

Change your mindset. Cast down those negative thoughts and feelings in your mind. Do not give the devil a moment of your time in your mind. Stay focused on what is most important and let go of the things that you cannot control or handle. God’s got this.

Final Words of Encouragement

God isn’t asking for us to figure it all out. He is wanting us to know and believe that He has already figured it out for us, and to trust Him. Growing in the faith and strengthening your relationship takes time. Just like with any other relationship that you have, it takes time to learn more about that person and to form a deeper connection with them.

God loves you and cares about you. He is always there for you and looks after you. The most important thing that should matter to us is God. That is why being content matters so much.

We are created to serve and please Him. Let everything that you do be to glorify Him. Again, choosing a Godly lifestyle is better than living in the flesh in this world.

Do things to show about much you love and care about God too.

This will really help with your relationship with The Lord.

God Bless. Sacha
