Why we need to embrace change in life and in business by Monica Devanand

Do you remember the days before you started your business or a new passion project? That deep burning desire you had to start something new? The sleepless nights of tossing and turning thinking about the big dreams you have for your future?

I do. I absolutely do! This was seven years ago. I was in the thick of my medical career, as I was starting to work in a private medical clinic, just when I thought this is it, after all the many years of training and working, I am finally here. I can now go to work, come back and be with my family and do it all again the next day. And that I did! But that was also the most intense time in my life, after suffering my first miscarriage and ill health to follow. Nothing seemed to go to plan. I was barely surviving and making it through the day.

And then God put it in my heart to start writing…

I ignored it. I couldn’t go through change. I wanted consistency.

Years passed, and Gods voice was constant. He kept reminding me to start what He has put in my heart. I was scared.

I didn’t like change.

He also told me to make new connections. He wanted me out of my comfort zone. He wanted me to lead.

But, I didn’t like change.

In 2016, I asked God to give me a reassurance. I still needed some comfort that change was good for me. I needed a good reason to step out into what He had called me for. I was fearful of the unknown. A part of me wanted change so badly, but the other part of me reminded me of where I had to stay and why I had to stay. I didn’t recognise that was the voice of the enemy. In prayer, He gave me a spirit of boldness to embrace the season of change.

And isn’t it funny how God works? His timing is always perfect because as He was taking me through this season of change, I was also in the thick of motherhood with a newborn in my arms. Just when I thought I couldn’t do anymore, He nudges me to step out further. But He also gave me great strength to start a blog, build a website and work on my life coaching business all while I was sleep deprived and tired.

I remember reflecting a few months ago, wondering how did I even get here? Now a life coach, coaching women and young girls, I’ve run workshops, designed products, authored chapters in life coaching books and now leading women in the community. How did this happen? I was in awe of the journey He has taken me on.

This was change; the change that was much needed in my life. I needed to step out of my comfort zone. I needed to say YES to change, knowing and believing His hands would guide me.

Today my friends, I want to encourage you through this. Change is good. Change will be a season of stretching you to your limits, a season that will test your faith, a time you will question your values. But the growing pains of change does not last forever.

Change is the time of transformation between where you are and where you want to be. That space in between? That is where change happens. And the beauty of that time is this. You start to GROW. You learn of your strengths, you find your coping skills; but the most beautiful part of this is seeing Gods hand transform you and your life, if you allow Him to. In that season of change and growth, you will discover yourself; you will discover your support network. You will draw closer to God if you allow Him to drive the process of change for you.

‘Change is a beautiful space, where God takes our weakness and transforms it into something good

for His glory.’

Our dreams for our life and business will always be an evolving process. And that is OK. I have seen God use each step and each experience of mine as a stepping-stone for something bigger. Each season we go through in business, the highs, the lows and the trials; we simply need to trust Him, for He has a greater plan and purpose for each season of our life. But the CHOICE is ours. We have to take the first step, only then CAN He work through us.

I love this quote by Erwin McManus,

‘Our action invokes God’s activity. It is as if God is waiting for someone to trust Him enough to act on His word. There is so much that God wants to do that can be seen only after we begin to do it.’

So may I encourage you, whether you are in ministry, a leader or in business, to embrace each season as a time where God is doing something new. Without the process of growth, He cannot make something new and better out of us. Like a caterpillar, it has to morph to grow. If it didn’t, then we wouldn’t be able to see the wonders of the beautifully created butterfly.

Hence just like that caterpillar, we need to allow God to work in us, and through us, breaking down the old, stretching us in ways only He can, and allowing for the renewing and refreshing change to take place; so that we may glorify Him in all that we do, in life and in serving others.
